An instructional designer decides how a resource teaches. Some write the activities, the assessment items, and the module scripts. Elsewhere the work is the needs analysis, the sequence, and the assessment strategy, set out in a design document for the people who write every word. Work reaches them from the subject expert, who sets the outcomes, scope, and depth. Their designs and materials pass to authors, editors, reviewers, and the people who prepare the course. This trade shapes what a learner does, in what order, and how it is checked.
